The City of Port Moody Official Community Plan supports livable neighbourhoods by promoting traffic calming measures on local streets in residential neighbourhoods when deemed necessary and supported by area residents.
A traffic calming initiative follows the process outlined in the Neighbourhood Traffic Calming Policy. Key steps include:
- Project Initiation
- Preliminary Screening
- Formation of Neighbourhood Advisory Committee
- Problem Identification
- Plan Development
- Measurement of local support
- Performance Monitoring
The city is committed to community involvement before implementing traffic calming measures. Residents’ opinion are important to the city. The city encourages residents to review the Neighbourhood Traffic Calming Policy and report their traffic safety issues.
The engineering devices adopted by the city are in accordance with the "Canadian Guide to Neighbourhood Traffic Calming", published by the Transportation Association of Canada (www.tac-atc.ca).
A traffic calming is commonly achieved by implementing the three E’s: Engineering, Education and Enforcement. Some cases require implementing all three E’s and some cases requires two of them or just one.
Speed humps is not always the solution to calm traffic down. Most of the time, the street own residents are the ones speeding. In this case, we encourage residents to educate their own neighbours about safety.
With the high volume of cars nowadays, the dream of having kids playing in the street is no longer existent. Kids should be playing in their backyards or parks. Streets should be left for cars and pedestrians.
