Spring Cleanup Leftovers - Items NOT collected
The following items were noted at curbside this week but NOT collected:
Any type of building, demolition or renovation materials
These items are listed on the Collection Calendar as NOT acceptable for spring clean-up
It is the responsibility of each resident to ensure any rejected items are removed from curbside and disposed of in the proper manner as soon as possible.
Recycling Collection
More recycling volumes is good news, but this may cause delays in curbside collection of your recyclables which, at times, may fall into the following day.
We request that you leave your recycling at curbside until the day after your regularly scheduled day before reporting it as a miss.
Multi-family complexes with toters may also find collection will sometimes fall into the following day.
We are currently working with the contractor to have more equipment and labour utilized within the city to keep up with increasing volumes and to ensure that each zone has service completed on schedule.
Port Moody's City-wide Garage Sale
Port Moody's first annual City-wide Garage Sale will take place on April 5 and 6! The City of Port Moody is promoting this multi-neighborhood event through advertisements and on its website at no cost to residents. Garage sales should start at 9:00am and end time is up to individual sellers. Interested bargain hunters can find a list of registered garage sale locations here after March 28 (deadline for registration was March 26).
Garbage and Recycling
The City of Port Moody offers residents and businesses a comprehensive garbage and recycling collection program. Port Moody needs everyone to recycle. As of January 1, 2008, Metro Vancouver has released a new list of items that are banned from disposal
Quick Links:
Port Moody’s residential garbage, recycling and yard waste collection is done by a contractor. International Paper Industries (I.P.I.) is the contractor currently servicing Port Moody
Single family homes have weekly curbside garbage, recycling and yard waste service. Multi-family homes and apartments use three-stream toters for recycling. Multi-family residences may use the city’s waste contractor or have an arrangement with their own contractor.
Remember to be Bear Aware and keep your garbage and recycling inside until the morning of collection.
Schedule and Zones
Port Moody is divided into four zones which represent Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. During weeks with statutory holidays the schedule is adjusted forward one day (i.e. if Monday is a holiday then the Monday zone is collected on Tuesday; the Tuesday zone is collected on Wednesday, etc.). The schedule reverts to the regular pattern the following week.
The City of Port Moody publishes an annual calendar which is distributed to every home and business in the city in early December. This calendar also includes the garbage collection schedule and other garbage and recycling information.
The zones, schedule and additional information can be found on the garbage and recycling pull out from the Port Moody Calendar.

January 1, 2008: New disposal regulations in effect
New regulations will prohibit throwing recyclable materials into the garbage. The regulations, part of Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Challenge, are to reduce solid waste going to our region’s landfills and increase recycling.
Trucks dumping waste at one of the region’s waste transfer stations will be charged a 50% surcharge if the load contains more than 5% recyclable material. In Port Moody, the contractor will not collect your garbage if an excess amount of recyclable material is noticed. Instead, your bin will be tagged with a note requesting the contents be sorted and properly recycled.

Electronics
End-of-life electronics can be dropped off as designated collection sites without charge. Collected electronics will then be recycled responsibly.
Accepted items include:
- Desktop computers
- Computer monitors
- Notebook computers
- Desktop printers and fax machines
- Televisions

Christmas Trees
Christmas trees are not recycled by the City. Check local papers for Christmas tree recycling and chipping opportunities in the tri-cities community.
Composting
Residents are strongly encouraged to compost their yard and kitchen waste. Composting reducing the material to humus, a nutrient-rich soil that can be added to lawns, gardens and planters.
The City of Port Moody sells composters at the Works Yard for $25.
Snow and ice service cancellations
During snowy and icy conditions, the city contractor may find it necessary to temporarily cancel collection of garbage, recycling and yard waste.
If this happens and your regular collection day is missed, the collection may occur on the following day if weather conditions permit. In some circumstances collection may be deferred to your regular day the following week. The two-container limit will be waived for the following week for the missed zones.
Slippery roads, especially in our hilly neighbourhoods, are unsafe for large collection vehicles and workers. The goal is for residents not to have to go for more than 10 working days without garbage collection, subject to the duration of adverse weather conditions.
