The Engineering & Operations  Department is responsible for the "hidden" services that we have all come to rely on as part of our daily lives.

Among the many services the City provides, the Engineering & Operations Department is responsible for the "hidden" services that we have all come to rely on as part of our daily lives, whether at work or play.  Otherwise referred to as the City's infrastructure, these services include:

  • Ensuring that we have clean and safe drinking water, which is supplied through underground pipes.
  • Maintaining a separate system of underground pipes to collect the sewer or waste water for proper treatment prior to discharging it to the environment.
  • Providing and maintaining the City's roads, sidewalks, streetlights, signage and lane markings.
  • Providing other key services including street cleaning and solid waste collection.

Wastewater Collection:

Port Moody maintains approximately 100 Km of sewage pipe and we service approximately 10,000 residents and businesses.

The City of Port Moody, as a member municipality of Metro Vancouver, is bound by the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District, Sewer Use Bylaw No. 299, 2007.  There are sewer use codes of practice that most businesses in Port Moody must follow.

In some cases, Metro Vancouver provides regulation or guidance to commercial businesses and institutions that don't currently operate under a waste discharge permit. Depending on the industry and the nature of the wastewater produced, Metro Vancouver uses one of the following approaches to help reduce the load that effluent from these industries can place on the wastewater collection and treatment system:

  • Education and awareness programs - Smart Steps, a program designed to help businesses save money and become more competitive by increasing the efficiency of its use of energy, water and materials.
  • Mandatory codes of practice - a mandatory Code of Practice specifies the equipment and/or activities that a sector must employ to remain in compliance.

Metro Vancouver is reviewing wastewater issues for the following types of businesses or commercial enterprises:

  • printing facilities
  • laboratories
  • recreation facilities
  • automotive businesses
  • car wash facilities
  • U-Brew/Wine premises
  • carpet cleaning services
  • funeral homes.

 Street Lights

The City of Port Moody and BC Hydro have teamed up for a new program to maintain street lights in a faster and more efficient manner. The Street Light Information Management (SLIM) program is designed to streamline the process for reporting and repairing street lights.

The two-pronged system involves a designated phone line at the City of Port Moody coupled with a special BC Hydro website accessible to city staff for identifying locations of services calls. The website allows city staff to quickly determine whether BC Hydro or the city owns the downed light. If the light is owned by BC Hydro, city staff can schedule a repair through the website. If the city owns the lamp, the repair can be dealt with at the local level.

The benefits of SLIM include a shorter turn-around-time to repair the street lights as well as the ability for city staff to monitor the progress of a repair on-line.

The Port Moody phone number to report downed lights is 604-469-4574.
