The City of Port Moody established a tree retention bylaw in 1999 to ensure that any trees requiring removal for development or construction of land or buildings other than for single-family dwellings will be replaced by two trees once the development is complete.
Developers intending to remove trees must submit an application to the City's Planning and Development Services Department. The approval process involves retaining an arborist who conducts a tree assessment of the property in question to determine which trees require removal and what species should be used to replace them.
The Tree Retention Bylaw also applies to private property when the following conditions exist:
- When trees or vegetation are located within a Streamside Protection and Enhancement Area. This is an area adjacent to a stream that links aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems and includes both the riparian area vegetation and the adjacent upland vegetation that exerts an influence on the stream. These specific areas are defined in the City of Port Moody Zoning Bylaw1988, NO. 1890.
- When trees are protected by covenant, Statutory Right-of-Way, or other means.
- When a tree has been identified to be retained as part of a Tree Retention Plan.
- When a tree has been identified as a "Significant Tree".
If any of these circumstances apply, or if you have questions or concerns about these conditions, please contact the City of Port Moody Planning Department at 604-469-4540.
