"The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding accomplishments that result in greater opportunities for persons with disabilities within Port Moody"
The award serves to recognize accomplishments and efforts made to improve accessibility for persons with disabilities throughout the City of Port Moody and to recognize initiatives that serve to reduce barriers, both social and physical, for people with disabilities.
The award has four separate categories:
- Accessibility Awareness
- An individual, group or business that has demonstrated an ability to promote the awareness of accessibility in the community.
- Accessibility Innovations
- An individual, group or business that demonstrates initiative through innovative measures that reduce barriers for people with disabilities.
- Architectural Improvement to Accessibility
- An organization that has removed barriers that prevent people from using their services through renovation, improvements etc.
- Architectural Innovations
- An organization, property owner, architect or builder who has made significant contributions through innovative plans for new construction.
The judging panel will consist of the City of Port Moody Community Care Committee members, who will make a recommendation to Council for final approval. Site visits will take place by the committee members to assess each individual nominee and results will be tallied at an in-camera meeting of the Committee.
Nomination forms will be accessible at City Hall, the Library, and available to be filled out online. Nominations can be submitted to City Hall by fax 604-469-4533, using the online form, email at planning@cityofportmoody.com or in person to City Hall c/o the Community Care Committee. Deadline for submissions is October 16 of each year. If October 16 falls on a weekend or holiday, submissions will be accepted up to the next working day. All eligible nominees will be contacted for their permission to participate in this event.
One winner will be selected and presented with an award at a Council meeting. Winners will also be recognized on a permanent plaque at City Hall. In the event of a runner-up, an Honorable Mention may also be awarded.

The award is named for Peter Hulbert, who was a very active community contributor until his death in 2004. He and his wife, Ann, traveled extensively and shared their journeys through slide shows at the Inlet Theatre. Peter, a professional photographer by trade, became an outspoken advocate for accessibility issues after suffering a stroke in the early 1990s. He served on Port Moody’s Community Care Committee and was a director for the Port Moody Foundation. |
