The City of Port Moody, incorporated in 1913, provides services to its 25,000 residents under the authority of the Provincial Local Government Act and Community Charter. Port Moody encompasses 2590 hectares (10 square miles), has a general annual operating budget of $25M and has a staff of 214 full time and 163 casual/part-time employees.

Council meetings are held every second and fourth Tuesday of the month in Council Chambers (Inlet Theatre), usually beginning at 7 p.m. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to attend the meeting, you have the option of watching it on TV – meetings are taped and later broadcast on Shaw Cable 4 at 9:00 am the following Saturday.

Elections are held province-wide on the third Saturday of November every three years: the next general election is scheduled for November 15, 2008. At that time, Port Moody residents will be asked to elect one mayor, six councillors and two trustees to the School District 43’s board.

Mayor Joe Trasolini was re-elected in 2005 to his third term as Mayor. Re-elected as Councillors are Meghan Lahti (first elected in 1997), Bob Elliott (first elected for the 1990 – 1992 term, and then re-elected in 2002) and Karen Rockwell (first elected in 2002). Three Councillors made the decision not to seek re-election in 2005 and as a result three new Councillors were elected: Mike Clay, Diana Dilworth (who previously had served as Councillor in the 1999 – 2002 term), and Shannon Watkins. School Trustees representing Port Moody are Melissa Hyndes and Keith Watkins.

Mayor and Council provide direction to City employees, who carry out the decisions and tasks set by Council and as outlined in the Local Government Act and Community Charter. In the most basic of democratic principles, Mayor & Council are accountable to their constituents: the residents of Port Moody. Residents can participate in the governing process by asking questions during the public input period that precedes and closes every Council meeting; speaking at a Public Hearing; addressing Council as a formal delegation on an issue of concern; or volunteering to serve on an advisory board or committee. Click here for more information on these options. You may also contact the Mayor or a Councillor directly at the numbers listed below, or visit the Mayor during his ‘Open Door Thursday’‑ call his assistant at 604-469-4501 for times. Of course, the most important way to get involved is to vote!

A number of appointed committees, commissions and boards advise Council and staff on a variety of issues. Mayor and Council provide leadership at these committees by acting as Chair and Vice-Chair. There are also statutory boards, namely the Police Board and Library Board, that work with Council in the delivery of those services.

In addition to the boards and committees, Port Moody is represented by either an elected official and/or a staff member on a large number of external bodies, including:

  • Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD), which has a number of committees pertaining to regional planning, sewage, water, labour relations and regional finance;
  • E-Comm;
  • TransLink;
  • Lower Mainland Treaty Advisory Committee (LMTAC);
  • Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM);
  • Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM);
