The Port Moody Heritage Register was established in August 2003 by Council Resolution. It is an official listing of properties that explains the heritage value of a historic place to a broad audience. Inclusion on the Heritage Register does not constitute heritage designation or any other form of permanent heritage protection.
The Heritage Register differs from the Heritage Inventory primarily in the amount of research that has been undertaken on the history of each property. Extensive research is compiled for each Heritage Register listing and written into a document called a Statement of Significance (SoS). The Statement of Significance is made up of 3 sections:
-
Description of Historic Place -- explains the general character of the historic place
-
Heritage Value of Historic Place -- explains why the character is historically valuable
-
Character-Defining Elements -- these provide concrete or discernable form to a place's heritage value
The City added 9 listings to the Port Moody Heritage Register in February 2004 and an additional 9 in February 2005, with the approval of property owners. We will continue to add listings from the Port Moody Heritage Inventory to the Port Moody Heritage Register in an effort to learn more about the history and value of the City's heritage assets.
The listings on the Port Moody Heritage Register (click to see each one below) are also listed on the Canadian Register of Historic Places, as part of Canada's Historic Places Initiative. Check it out at www.historicplaces.ca
The Heritage Register is also available for viewing at the Port Moody Public Library.
