 Good luck and happy hunting!

Port Moody’s solid waste collection is now an automated system where trucks use a mechanical arm to empty garbage, recycling, and kitchen & yard waste. The City’s goal is to reduce the amount of garbage going into our landfills.

Single family homes have weekly curbside garbage pick-up and biweekly recycling and kitchen & yard waste service. Multi-family homes and apartments use three-stream toters for recycling. Multi-family residences may use the City’s waste contractor or have an arrangement with their own contractor.

How to request a cart change:

Residents may request an upsize of garbage collection carts from the 120 litre standard issue to a 240 litre cart.  All requests must be submitted prior to November 30 each year to receive carts for the following calendar year.  If you would like to downsize your collection cart from a 240 litre to the standard 120 litre cart, please e-mail recycle@cityofportmoody.com prior to November 30th.  Broken or lost carts will be dealt with at all times during the year.  Please e-mail recycle@cityofportmoody.com or contact Operations at 469-4574 to report any damage.

Metro Vancouver Banned Items

Port Moody needs everyone to recycle. As of January 1, 2008, Metro Vancouver has released a new list of items that are banned from disposal

Collection during snow and ice conditions:

During snowy and/or icy road conditions, the city may find it necessary to delay garbage, recycling and or yard/kitchen waste collection.

If this happens, and your regular collection day is missed, collection will occur on the following day if weather conditions permit.  In some circumstances, collection may be delayed more than one day if extreme conditions persist.  If necessary, collection will continue into the weekend.

Slippery roads, especially on sloped and more challenging streets, are unsafe for large collection vehicles and workers.  Our first priority will be to clear/plow roads to make collection possible.  Please do not bring in your carts unless there is a special notice posted on the home page of the web site advising you to do so.  If this occurs, an alternate schedule will be posted to advise when your collection will be completed.

Cart placement during snow conditions:
It is the resident’s responsibility to clear appropriate space at the curb/roadway in front of their property for placement of carts.  If you are unsure where to place your carts in severe weather conditions on your street, please contact Operations at 469-4574 for advice.

January 1, 2008: New disposal regulations in effect

New regulations will prohibit throwing recyclable materials into the garbage. The regulations, part of Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Challenge, are to reduce solid waste going to our region’s landfills and increase recycling.

Trucks dumping waste at one of the region’s waste transfer stations will be charged a 50% surcharge if the load contains more than 5% recyclable material. We will not collect your garbage if an excess amount of recyclable material is noticed. Instead, your bin will be tagged with a note requesting the contents be properly recycled.
