RELATED INFORMATION

Major roads, transit corridors and connector routes, as well as particularly hazardous areas, are plowed and salted by city crews.

Snow and ice on the city streets leaving you cold? When winter conditions hit, Port Moody is prepared. Pre-planned routes are cleared in a manner that efficiently and effectively meets residents' winter needs. Major roads, transit corridors and connector routes, as well as particularly hazardous areas, are all automatically plowed and salted by city staff. All other roads are subject to on-call service. This system allows staff to reach the maximum amount of people in the least amount of time, while also providing the flexibility our smaller population affords us.

City Bylaw Reminder:

3.1 An owner or occupier of land shall maintain a sidewalk and boulevard and in particular shall:
a) Remove accumulations of filth, leaves, rubbish, discarded materials,
hazardous objects and materials which obstruct a drainage facility;
b) in keeping with the reasonable standard of maintenance in the area,
keep grassed areas trimmed and free of all weeds including noxious
weeds;
c) keep in good repair and up to City standards all driveway crossings;
d) trim and maintain plantings on or adjacent to a highway.

  • City staff are prepared for the winter, with serviced equipment and with everything set to go should the snow begin to fall.
  • Snow and ice priority routes are prepared and reviewed every year, taking into account new developments, hazardous areas and public response.
  • Police monitor roads for dangerous conditions, contacting crews in the event that they exist.
  • Weather reports are constantly monitored. If low temperatures are foreseen, we're on alert!
  • Police are available to take your calls. Contact the police department non-emergency line at 604-461-3456 to report any winter driving trouble spots. They will contact city crews to rectify the problem. Do not call 9-1-1 unless it is an emergency!!!

Port Moody's policy on road clearing works on a priority basis designed to rectify hazardous conditions as quickly as possible, while also reaching the most people in the least time.

  1. Reduce hazards on major routes and provide assistance to emergency response vehicles such as fire, police and ambulance.
  2. Major roads and transit routes
  3. Connector routes
  4. Hazardous local or residential roads
  5. On-call service

For your convenience a complete list of roads and their priorities is available to the right under "Related Information", or call the Operations department at 604-469-4537 for more information.

Meanwhile, please don't drive on the roads, particularly the very steep and winding ones so many of our residents are very familiar with. Use public transit as an alternative or if you must drive, make sure that your vehicle is equipped with good snow tires (all-season tires are not effective in snow and ice) and that you have a cold weather emergency kit on hand.

In case of a medical emergency call 9-1-1 immediately. City crews will assist emergency agencies such as fire, police, and ambulance with requests for emergency access to roadways.

What you can do:

  • Clear snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours of the end of a snowfall or ice forming. The responsibility for this cleanup lies with the owner or resident of the adjacent property, be it a business or residential tenant. There is strict liability should any injuries or damages be incurred as a result of an unsafe sidewalk.  If clearing is not finished within the allotted time, the owner/occupant of the property could be fined and the city may complete the work at the owner/occupier's expense. Please see Bylaw 2426 for more information on the Sidewalk and Boulevard Maintenance Bylaw.
  • Locate and clean catch basin grates in the roadway in front of your home. This helps to prevent flooding by clearing a path for run-off of melting snow.
  • Clear the snow from any fire hydrants in front of your home so that, if needed, the fire department can locate them in case of an emergency.
  • Do not to park on the road after it snows as this can impede the ability of snowplows to do their job. The city may prohibit parking temporarily so as to facilitate clearing of the snow.
  • Garbage collection
    During snowy and icy conditions, the city contractor may find it necessary to temporarily cancel collection of garbage, recycling and yard waste.
    If this happens and your regular collection day is missed, the collection may occur on the following day if weather conditions permit. In some circumstances collection may be deferred to your regular day the following week. The two-container limit will be waived for the following week for the missed zones.
    Slippery roads, especially in our hilly neighbourhoods, are unsafe for large collection vehicles and workers. The goal is for residents not to have to go for more than 10 working days without garbage collection, subject to the duration of adverse weather conditions.
  • Do not shovel snow onto sidewalks. This is a hazard to pedestrians.
  • In order to avoid clearing your driveway twice, pile snow on the left side (with you facing your house). Many times this can minimize the amount of snow pushed back into your driveway by plowing crews.
